How to Draw a Lion Step by Step

Draw Basic Shapes
Sketch a large oval for the body and a smaller circle for the head.
Start by drawing a large oval shape for the lion's body. Just above it, sketch a smaller circle for the head. Use gentle, light strokes so you can adjust as needed. These basic shapes will serve as the foundation for your lion, guiding the rest of the drawing process.

Add Proportion Lines
Draw a vertical line through the head and horizontal lines for eyes and mouth.
Next, draw a vertical line running down the center of the head circle. Add horizontal lines where the eyes and mouth will be. These lines help you place the lion's facial features accurately, maintaining symmetry and balance in your drawing.

Outline Contours
Refine the lion's head and body outline using the shapes as guides.
Now, use the shapes as guides to outline the lion's head and body more precisely. Smooth out the curves and define the contours of the lion's powerful frame. This step is important for capturing the essence of the lion's majestic form.

Position Major Features
Draw the lion's eyes, nose, and mouth using the proportion lines.
With the proportion lines in place, draw the lion's eyes along the horizontal line, and position the nose and mouth below. These features are key to expressing the lion's character and strength. Take your time to get them just right.

Add Secondary Details
Sketch the lion's mane, ears, legs, and tail using the body shapes.

Finish with Line Weight
Darken the final lines, adding weight to the outlines and details.

Add Tone and Shade
Pick where the light comes from, then shade the opposite side with light strokes.
Time to learn tone. Artists call the grays between white and black values, and even three are enough: light, medium and dark. Decide where your light comes from, and imagine it shining from the top left. Now shade the opposite side with the side of your pencil, in soft even layers. Shading is what makes your drawing feel round instead of flat.

Finishing Touches
Darken the boldest edges, fill the darkest details, and add a few texture strokes.
The last minute is where the magic happens. Press harder on the outer contour so it stands out, and keep the inside lines thin and soft. Fill your darkest little details completely, add a few short strokes for texture, and give the drawing a soft shadow to sit on. Mixing thin, soft and hard lines is what gives a drawing its character.
