How to Draw a Girl Step by Step

Welcome to your first drawing lesson. We'll create a simple pencil sketch of a girl, step by step. Each card below shows exactly what your page should look like at that step. New lines are dark, earlier lines fade back, guides are orange.

the method ✎

We'll use classic construction, starting with basic shapes like circles and ovals. This method helps us build the figure accurately and proportionately.

Start with Big Shapes

Draw a circle for the head and an oval for the body.

Begin by sketching a light circle for the head and an oval beneath it for the body. These shapes will serve as the foundation for our girl's figure, helping us keep everything in proportion.

check: Ensure the circle and oval are lightly drawn and positioned to reflect the head and torso relationship ✎

Add Proportion Lines

Lightly draw a vertical center line and horizontal guide for the eyes on the head circle.

Next, add a vertical line down the center of the head circle and a horizontal line across it. These lines help us position the facial features symmetrically and align them correctly.

check: the lines are centered and light enough to adjust if needed ✎

Outline the Contour

Refine the head and body shapes, adding curves for shoulders and hips.

Refine the head and body by adding gentle curves for the shoulders and hips. This step gives our girl a more defined silhouette, moving beyond basic shapes to a more realistic outline.

check: Ensure the contour flows smoothly, maintaining a natural shape for the body ✎

Place Major Features

Sketch eyes, nose, and mouth using the proportion guides on the head.

Using the horizontal guide, sketch the eyes on either side of the vertical line. Add a small nose and mouth below. These features bring life to our character, making her face expressive and engaging.

check: Verify that the facial features are evenly spaced and aligned with the guide lines ✎

Add Secondary Details

Draw hair, arms with hands, and legs with feet extending from the body.

Now, add details like hair flowing from the head, and sketch the arms with hands and legs with feet. These details complete the figure, giving her character and personality.

check: the limbs are proportionate and the hair complements the head shape ✎

Finish with Line Weight

Darken the final lines, adding weight to contours and features.

Finally, go over your drawing with a firmer hand, darkening the lines to give the sketch depth and definition. This step highlights the contours and features, making your drawing stand out with confidence.

check: Ensure all important lines are bold and clear, adding a professional touch to your sketch ✎

Add Tone and Shade

Pick where the light comes from, then shade the opposite side with light strokes.

Time to learn tone. Artists call the grays between white and black values, and even three are enough: light, medium and dark. Decide where your light comes from, and imagine it shining from the top left. Now shade the opposite side with the side of your pencil, in soft even layers. Shading is what makes your drawing feel round instead of flat.

check: the shading sits on the side away from the light ✎

Finishing Touches

Darken the boldest edges, fill the darkest details, and add a few texture strokes.

The last minute is where the magic happens. Press harder on the outer contour so it stands out, and keep the inside lines thin and soft. Fill your darkest little details completely, add a few short strokes for texture, and give the drawing a soft shadow to sit on. Mixing thin, soft and hard lines is what gives a drawing its character.

check: your outer lines look bolder than your inner ones ✎
