How to Draw a Fox Step by Step

Basic Shapes
Sketch a circle for the head and an oval for the body.
Begin by drawing a circle lightly for the fox's head. Below it, sketch an oval for the body. These shapes will serve as the foundation for your fox, giving you a sense of its overall size and placement on the page.

Proportions and Guides
Draw a vertical center line and horizontal cross line on the head circle.
Lightly draw a vertical line down the center of the head circle, then add a horizontal line across it. These guide lines will help you position the fox's facial features symmetrically, ensuring everything is balanced and aligned.

Outline the Fox
Refine the contour of the head and body, adding ear triangles.
Refine the outline of the head and body, giving them a more fox-like shape. Add two triangles on top of the head for the ears. These contours will start to bring your fox to life, defining its characteristic silhouette.

Place Major Features
Use guides to draw eyes, snout, and front legs.
Using the guide lines, draw the fox's eyes and snout on the head circle. Then, sketch the front legs extending from the body oval. These features are essential for capturing the fox's expression and posture.

Add Secondary Details
Draw the back legs, tail, and details on the face.
Add the back legs extending from the body oval, and sketch the bushy tail behind. Add details like the nose and mouth on the snout. These elements complete the fox's form and add character to its face.

Finishing Touches
Darken the lines for the final outline, adding fur texture.
Now, press harder with your pencil to darken the final outline of your fox. Add some fur texture by drawing short, quick lines along the body and tail. This final step enhances the drawing's definition and gives it a more realistic appearance.

Add Tone and Shade
Pick where the light comes from, then shade the opposite side with light strokes.
Time to learn tone. Artists call the grays between white and black values, and even three are enough: light, medium and dark. Decide where your light comes from, and imagine it shining from the top left. Now shade the opposite side with the side of your pencil, in soft even layers. Shading is what makes your drawing feel round instead of flat.

Finishing Touches
Darken the boldest edges, fill the darkest details, and add a few texture strokes.
The last minute is where the magic happens. Press harder on the outer contour so it stands out, and keep the inside lines thin and soft. Fill your darkest little details completely, add a few short strokes for texture, and give the drawing a soft shadow to sit on. Mixing thin, soft and hard lines is what gives a drawing its character.
